ICFAR is one of 12 University-based centres and units at the University of the Arts London, and the only centre specifically focused on fine art practice based research. Hosted at Central Saint Martins, the centre works across the University as a hub for collaborative research and as a network that brings artists and researchers together in forums, from closed, intimate workshops to public discussions and laboratories. ICFAR works across the spectrum of fine art practice. All fine art staff at UAL are eligible to propose collaborative projects to the Centre. We can provide support, and help to generate new projects. We run a regular salon, Ideas and Aperitifs, where staff can meet each other and present new work, and a research leadership forum that focuses on the nuts and bolts of writing funding applications. We are actively engaged in supporting doctoral students through seminars and master classes, and organise doctoral research events in collaboration with other UAL centres, other universities, and in conjunction with the Research Network University of the Arts London (RNUAL), the University wide research-training programme.
ICFAR is staffed by a part-time Director, Claire MacDonald, and a full-time Administrator, Chris Ralls. Its strategic Management Board is chaired by Professor Chris Wainwright. A Management Team composed of fine art research staff working on active research projects, Chaired by Professor Paul Coldwell, advises on new research and the developing doctoral and publications programmes. ICFAR welcomes enquiries from UAL staff about developing research projects, as well as from potential outside partners and from prospective doctoral students.
The ICFAR ofice is located on the first floor of the Greek Street Annex of the CSM site on Charing Cross Road.
